The test is divided into four subtests: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
The Listening and Reading subtests are designed to assess a candidate’s ability to understand spoken and written English, based on health-related topics and tasks common to all professions.
The Writing and Speaking subtests are specific to the 12 individual healthcare professions and designed to reflect common tasks performed in the workplace.

  • How is OET different to general and academic English tests?

OET is the obvious choice for healthcare professionals looking to register and practice in English speaking countries.
OET uses real communication scenarios candidates will experience in their healthcare workplace. General or academic tests, on the other hand, assess English language skills using every day or academic scenarios.
OET is recognised globally and is seen as a more relevant certification in the healthcare sector. Apply for OET and launch your international healthcare career today.

  • Who recognises OET as proof of English proficiency?

OET is used as proof of English proficiency by health regulators in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Namibia, Singapore and Dubai for registration in 12 healthcare professions. OET is also accepted by major health educators and recruiters.

Take the Writing subtest, we ask most candidates to prepare referral letters based on case notes specific to their profession.
In the Speaking subtest, a candidate role-plays as a doctor, nurse or another profession which tests their ability to proficiently conduct a healthcare consultation with a patient or carer.

  • How long does the OET take?

OET is broken into four subtests: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
While the test won’t take a full day to sit, it’s important to allow a full day to complete OET.
The reason for this is that times for the Speaking subtest can be allocated anywhere between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm. For this reason, it is important to be available for the entire day.
You will receive your Speaking subtest time at least one week before your test date.
